Default Oil change reminder

I don't actually own a GMC Terrain; I'm posting on behalf of a friend and co-worker who drives one. (I think it's a 2013, although I'm not entirely sure, and he bought it used less than a year ago.) He doesn't know a lot about computers, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't know how to (or be inclined to) come to ask about this, so I thought I'd ask this question for him after trying some Google searches and having no luck.

Anyway, he told me today that he took his car recently to the dealer to get its scheduled oil change (he has free oil changes for a year or something), after a reminder came on his center screen that usually displays the satellite radio information. But he told me that the strange (and annoying) thing about the message was its content: It said, in so many words, "It's time to take your vehicle to Jiffy Lube for your scheduled oil change." I asked him to make sure I understood what he meant: Yes, it actually said "Jiffy Lube"! He said and I agree with him that he didn't want advertising in his car, which is what the message amounts to. (Also, even after the oil change, the message still appears, so whoever did the oil change didn't clear it.)

So, has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there anything my friend can do, short of taking it back to the dealer (and probably having to pay extra) to get them to clear the message, or at least change it so the advertising doesn't show the next time the message appears? Thanks in advance to anyone that might be able to help!

Default Oil Change Reminder

I just noticed the same thing on my 2012 Chevy Cruze -- "This is your car speaking. Help!! I need an oil change. Take me to Jiffy Lube Now" It didn't actually speak, the words just appeared & scrolled on the infotainment screen.

At first I thought it was an ad from the radio station (not Satellite), but it's been there for days now.

I don't how it got there or how to delete it.

Thanks for the reply, Sharon! I'm glad to know my friend isn't the only one that this has happened to. He told me that his Terrain is actually a 2012 instead of a 2013; and since yours is a 2012 also (although it isn't an SUV), that makes me wonder if that year of GMC vehicles had the Jiffy Lube message programmed into the computer. Something needs to be done about it, don't you think?

I have an update...Another co-worker of ours told us today that her Ford Focus (not even a GMC vehicle!) had a similar Jiffy Lube message on her screen. It looks like the problem is becoming more widespread.

But we might have an answer: My friend called the dealer today where he got his Terrain and took it for the oil change. Whoever he spoke to told him that a lot of people have been calling about this, and as it turns out, neither GMC nor Jiffy Lube is causing it: It's the local radio stations that they're listening to, supposedly on Jiffy Lube's behalf! The stations are using the signal that's sent to cars that have the screens and display information not just for satellite radio, but also for FM (and, presumably, AM) stations, and sending Jiffy Lube advertising to the screens.

Our other co-worker told us that hers said something like "Stop and read this! Take your car to Jiffy Lube!" So not only is it advertising, but it can cause distracted driving if someone thinks the message is important enough to actually take their eyes off the road to read it!

So it seems this is a new advertising tactic that Jiffy Lube is doing to try to drum up more business. I haven't taken any car there in many years, and I certainly won't do it now.

This is absolutely insane. Completely crazy. I guess the original owner agrees to these advertisements as a result of not reading small print when originally operating the infotainment system. Or, perhaps you can't use the infotainment system WITHOUT agreeing to them. Hopefully we'll learn more about this. Whatever you learn from the dealership, please update us here...

I heard the same thing on the Cruze forum. Someone wrote that the radio stations have figured out that they can advertise on the display screens where the song title and musician are displayed.

As the original (1 & only) owner, I didn't agree to anything other than to make my car payment when I bought my Cruze. I just have a regular FM/AM radio - no satellite.
