Default 2002 GMC Yukon transmission question

My kids 2002 GMC Yukon transmission seems like its slipping. He only paid 2500 for it and most repair shops want around 5000 to replace it. Needless to say it will go to the junkyard. But before I do that, is it worth changing out the transmission solenoid valves first? They are inexpensive and don't seem very hard to replace. Thanks for any advice.
