so i have read a little about this issue, and i was talking to my dad(who has owned and worked on chevy/gmc/dodge motors his whole life) and thought the only way to sae my 2002 sierra would be to replace the whole engine, but due to the same issue i am affraid to replace it with an engin between the years 01-06. my dad mentioned that he did not notice any major damage to the engine that if we replace the cylinder head with one from 2007 and up we may avoid this issue......any idea wether this is possible or not? we are unsure if it would fit....any input would be helpful :)
Thanks!

This is only exists on head made by Castech, one of the sources (foundry) GM used to make the head.

Here is the Technical Service Bulletin

You got to make sure that the parts you buy to replace the heads are not the same and this tells you how to indentify.

What used GMC/Chevy to Buy ?

I ran two 1989 Chevy pickups out to about 230,000 miles with no engine or transmission problems. When I bought my 2000 GMC Sierra with 119,000 miles on it, I figured I was getting a relatively low mileage pickup that would be reliable and last me for several more years. Sadly, my 2000 Sierra has been a terrible truck, with engine and transmission problems in particular, plus a dozen smaller problems . Nearly every time I drive it, a new problem appears. The truck was treated very well by the previous owner, and looked in showroom condition, with no sign of ever having a trailer hitch. The engine and transmission problems are all known common problems with my truck, and are caused by poor design from the factory. As I read more about GM trucks of recent years, I can't find a model that's not plagued with problems. My question is then, if I was to buy another used GM pickup, what would I buy that's reliable ? It would seem that a manual transmission is more reliable than an automatic, but my 5.3 liter Vortec engine has piston slap and piston pin rapping noises, both due to factory screwups, so isn't a very good engine . Are there Dodge trucks that are more reliable ? It would seem that GM forgot how to build a good pickup.
