02 GMC Sierra turns over 3 times before starts up

I have a 02 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 engine 4x4 extended cab. It does matter if it's in the morning cold, been running hot...whenever I turn it off, it takes 3 cranks before it fires back up. Once it fires up, there are no problems what so ever...runs like a champ! I just don't get why it fires up after 3 cranks...not 1, or 2, but 3 every single time. I'm not sure why this is happening so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
by three cranks, do you mean turning the key to the start position three separate times?
 
Yes, turning key 3 times. If I turn the key and leave it turned to for over a couple of seconds beyond normal, it doesn't seem to do anything more than just crank over.
