While the truck ran the tach would vary a couple of hundred RPM, then run fine. Then one night it died. Now it turns over but doesn't catch at all. plus it doesn't sound the same. Any ideas?

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter and have the ICM inspected since you mentioned that the Tach had issues. Remove the ICM which is located in the Distributor and have it check at Auto Zone, Napa or any other parts store that can check it for you free of charge to make sure it's still working and also inspect the wire leads to the ICM for corrosion or any other type of damages.

You may be lucky to find a corroded wire lead to your ICM which is common from condensation that form under the distributor cap if the breather screen is dirty under the distributor plate.
