1986 jimmy idoling problem when cold

when the jimmy first starts it idols fine but needs constint gas so it doesnt die. also if it started ok and idles fine somtimes shifting into revers kills it. Any ideas how to fix it? still has origanial engine and still carboreted. then when runnig a while it idols fine

Change your fuel filter if you haven't yet.. check fuel pressure and if that's good you can cross that from the list. From there, it could be an issue with the carb- that its dirty. Carb cleaner spray for it and sea foam in the fuel tank. Next, I would check spark plugs if cleaning doesn't fix it. Some of those plugs are pains to remove. I had to take off the wheel well to get to some and the steering arm. Check out youtube for how to do that. Let us know if you get it

Good advice. Great places to start.

Also, keep the fuel injectors in mind. My first thought was that it sounds like the fuel system is having trouble getting fuel to the engine. Fuel filter and pump are the more common culprits, followed by the fuel injectors. My philosophy is to start with the cheapest first. In this case, i would suggest starting with checking the spark plugs, then the fuel filter. Fuel pumps are rather expensive, and difficult to change. Usually they have an "all or nothing" behavior. It is possible for them to be weak, just isn't as common. I'd move to the injectors if the filter and plugs check out ok.

I also just found out that the vaccum hoses that come out of the carb are pluged off and that its missing majority of its emisson parts are missing idk if that matters but there you go i also check the compersion of the engine and its come out perfect
