I am looking to replace my steering column because the one on there is totally loose. I've had some issues getting it gear and shutting it off. The mechanic said it'll cost the same to replace the guts as it would be replacing the whole column. He quoted me $425. I found an add on Craigslist for two columns... an 88' and a 93'($85). Will either of these fit my truck?

i would not buy one. Your colum needs no parts to fix. The problem is the bolts at the tilt joint have back off and require tightening.

Takes about 1.5 hours to repair but does require taking colum apart.

I considered doing that but I'm not too mechanically inclined and I didn't want to go through the trouble only to have to replace it. But I'll give a shot and will post results. Thanks for the info. :D

well if you put in a uesed one this will happen again.
Go back to your mechanic and price just tighting the bolts (NO PARTS REQUIRED) and get a price. If he still wants 425 bucks go some where else. Most of these colums do this and most techs know it's just labor to fix.
Shop the repair should be about 175 or less.

Wow... I am so happy forums like this exist! Especially for non-mechanics like myself. I took your advise and got a friend to help me out. He's more mechanical than I am so I let him tear it apart. It was just like you said... tighten some bolts and wallah, all done. Thanks again for the great advise!
:D
