Aquired a 92 jimmy in above average condition for scrap value(steal) everything is stock so I am slowly replacing alternator, starter, etc.
The one thing that is baffling me, mostly because no one seems to have an old engine code reader:

Black smoke on start up(no performance issues just black smoke) and sometimes what feels like a flood where you have to floor it to kick it over(decent sized black smoke cloud) has happened maybe 4 times in 2 months.

Engine light will come on while idling, turn off engine, restart, healthy puff of black smoke light goes off.

rotor to spark plugs replaced.

I do not have a problem replacing parts that may not need replacing...just for laughs where would you start.

thanks

P.S. car woks great, just on startup black smoke.

Black Smoke

CPI?

You need to replace the 'spider' (available almost anywhere) inside the manifold. Get a gasket too. Make a picture or take a photo of all the sensors you need to disconnect then remove the upper manifold. You will see the spider it is connected to the CPI (get a complete spider with the injector) CPI sometimes cracks throws a lot of fuel but starts & runs - same symptoms as you describe and a very common problem with CPI. Old spider very hard to replace as those short lines get so brittle. Also be sure to get the supply lines (they are short) that feed the spider.

It will be worth your while as these little Jimmy's are fabulous
4X4's.

black smoke on startup is usually just a whole crap of carbon build up, try using seafoam through a vaccum line, should clear it up, also a good thing you can try is replacing catalitic converter(or just put a peice of straight pipe here) and a new muffler
