1994 gmc c1500 A/C problems

I bought this truck brand new 19 years ago. For the last few years the A/C has been low on freon. I bought all the stuff and found the high side schrader valve had a leak. I replaced it, the dyer and the orfice tube put it all back together and charged it with freon. It worked perfect, I drove to my boat which is an hour away and it worked with no problems, we went to eat lunch and no problems, went back to the boat and shut it off for a while (30 minutes) and started back home. When I started the truck to come home the a/c was blowing hot air. I opened the hood and the compressor wasn't running. Now it was working fine when I pulled in but when I started it to go back home it never blew cold air. I drove it back home with no a/c and parked the truck. The next day I went to check the freon and it works fine again so what is causing this?

You could very well have a bad electrical connection.Try wiggling the wires and connectors at the compressor and the accumulator with engine running and a/c system on.
