What would cause a air conditioner compressor to stop working. I turned on the switch and it does not even try to kick in under the hood. it is getting worm here and I do not have the extra cash to take it and put it in the shop.......Help......:(

well cool air cost money but try a bottle of 134 and put in in (parts store will sell you what you need) and see what happens.

It is low on freon. So you either had some come out over the winter or you have a bigger leak. You need to put a set of AC gages on the system and see if you have any freon left. If you have some pressure in the system then maybe a can or two of freon will get it running. If you have 0 pressure in the system you have a major leak that needs to be found and fixed before you can fill the system . Good luck

So if there is no freon at all, the compressor wont even engage?

There's a low pressure switch attached to the accumulator/dryer (the aluminum canister mounted on the passenger side firewall). That switch will not allow the compressor to energize without sufficient refrigerant in the system. It does this by mechanically sensing freon pressure. That switch does fail occasionally. Start with the advice in the above posts. It's your safest method.

ok thanks. I just got my sierra from my uncle, a 95, it has been in storage since 96 until a 2 weeks ago when I bought it from him. I'm guessing the freon leaked with all this time.
