HI, i just bought this 96 Jimmy, it has 240,000 miles. it is giving me a code (multiple cylinder missfire) and it has black smoke, backfires, hard to start. Has put the transmission in "limp home mode" second gear only. I also got some information from the code reader But i dont know what it means... Can someone help me please! ? it reads for the IGNITION ADVANCE: -24 Does this mean that it has the wrong timing? is there any thing i can look for to tell it has jumped time? Thanks SO much in advance Cory-
I realize it has high miles, and that is why i am not ruling out any possibility. It is in great shape regardless. and it will be fixed. The engine sounds good. no knocks or ticks. I have a 97 s10 with over 300,000 miles. on it still runs like new !! I forgot to mention, i have pulled the upper intake plenum off and i replaced the fuel regulator, and the spider looked good as well. Thanks Again. I will look at the distributor shaft that is a good idea..Thanks
RULED OUT - (i replaced already)
not the wires cap or rotor
not the map sensor
not the mass air flow
I cleaned the egr

You mentioned you replace the rotor and cap and wires. Recheck the spark plug wires, it sounds like you have them crossed. Rare to have the engine jump a timing.

1996 GMC S15/T15 Jimmy 4WD
4.3 liter V-6 VIN "W"
Firing order 1-6-5-4-3-2
Cylinder # driver side radiator to firewall 1-3-5
Cylinder # passenger side radiator to firewall 2-4-6
Distributor passenger side radiator to firewall 2-4-6-coil
Distributor drivers side radiator to firewall 3-1-5

Common for most to cross the drivers side with the 1-3 spark plug wires.

Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you get more miles out of your Jimmy.
