Hey fellas... noob poster here, but I am really hoping for some help...

Our family truckster is a 1997 GMC suburban 2500. We love this truck. This past november, it spun a bearing. I was able to buy another 1997 sub (1500) with a nice motor, and horse-traded with my mechanic: he puts the new-to-me engine in our suburban and he keeps the busted motor and the other suburban.

I picked up the truck today... mechanic (who I have had good work and trust with, so far) asks me to bring some tranny fluid, says he thinks it is low...

We add some fluid (it was a little low) but the tranny isn't right... hesitates going from park to drive, maybe 2 seconds longer than norm. Same hesitation going into reverse. A slight but noticeable whine that sounds mechanical (not air or rubbing) that keeps pace with the engine rpms... at about 50 MPH, the tranny slips, causing the rpms to surge 500 or so then drop back down, then surge again...

Mechanic is guessing the tranny filter is gunked up? The truck sat for almost 5 months before we did the swap.

The transmission wasn't pulled or swapped during the engine work, and I never had even a whiff of trouble from the tranny prior to this... truck has 160k miles on her.

Help! :)

Edited to add: The fluid looks bright red and clean... but the level is hard to check. Meaning that it appears to be over-full. The mechanic added fluid when I picked up the truck today, and at one point it 'burped' fluid from the filler neck while he was doing so. Several ounces or more. I know that when I look at the dipstick after wiping and re-inserting, the fluid mark seems to be uniform all the way up through the 'add' and 'full' marks...
