Hey guys. I've tried searching for this problem. I'm not good with anything that has to do with the ignition. So here is where I'm at.

I bought a 1998 gmc jimmy, dropped a motor in it. Got it running good, as long as I use my toggle switch to start it, that I wired directly.

Now if I use the key, it will make a winding sound once all the electrical things come on. But when I go to crank it, it does nothing. Currently, I can turn it to the on position and press my rigged-button to start it.

So, what's my next step into getting to use just the key?

Thanks guys.

Like when a starter is turning over but isn't engaging ?

No not really. Sounds like its coming from the steering column. And it doesn't do it every time.
