I just picked up a 1998 Jimmy here in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It was imported and bought from the original owner.

If it sits for a while, overnight or while I'm at work it starts immediately, otherwise it takes a few seconds for it to start.

About a week ago I had to cycle the key a couple times to get it to release from the ignition.

2 nights ago I went to start it and it turned over but no start. I let it sit for a minute, started it, and it died a few seconds later but all the power died with it and then popped back on a second later, the key was still in the run position. After that it started but it seemed like the mileage display was pulsing slightly.

Yesterday I tried to start it after it sat for about an hour. It turned over but wouldn't fire. Tried again and the starter clicked like the battery was dead then all the power cut out again, and I couldn't rotate the key to remove it from the ignition. Yes, it was in park.

I have seen something similar working on VW's at a dealership so I disconnected and reconnected the PCM plugs 1 at a time. When I got back in all the power was back on and it started right up. All my radio (aftermarket radio) stations got deleted but it kept the correct time. And the rear wiper no longer works, but the rear washer will run if I push the button.

Any suggestions as to what the culprit might be?

Jim
