1999 gmc jimmy, fan cluch, how to stop the pully from spinning to remove cluch?

I have been trying to remove the fan cluch on my jimmy, but the pully hub turns, How can I stop the hun from turning while removing the large center nut? A sharp smack wo the wrhech with a hammer dont help.

Eileen, I think you're going about this the hard way! All you have to do is remove the serpentine belt and then remove the four nuts or bolts that holds the whole assembly to the water-pump. Be careful you don't drop or bang the radiator with the fan blades cause the clutch and blades are heavy.

Some people elect to remove the four nuts off the fan blades where the connect to the fan clutch and slide it toward the water-pump for safety's sake. This is so you don't accidentally bump the radiator when removing the fan clutch from the water-pump

They make special tools to aid in doing this. If you look on the water pump pulley, you will see some small holes parallel from each other. They are there to fit a spanner type tool to hold the pulley while you wrench on the fan clutch nut itself. I am a flat rate mechanic so my personal favorite, time saving way to do it is actually with an impact hammer and a steady hand, but that takes a little experience. Good luck.

if the pulley behing the fan has nuts on it sometimes you can use a wrench and screwdriver to put leverage on that pulley to turn against it,2 sometimes those pulleys require a special"spanner" wrench to hold them in place rent one at advanced or auto zone 3 go by an auto repair shop and ask the m to zap it with the air hammer real quick.They make wrenchs for those fan nuts that mount on air hammers that is really the easiest way to remove them also make sure you clutch isn't left hand thread

I always did mine with the belt on the pulley should not be spinning with the belt on
