2001 GMC sierra 1500 5.3l auto 4wd. Rear diff driver side side gear is smashed and the teeth are torn apart but at the same time the two spider gears and passenger side gears apear...visually.. to be ok, why did this happen and what would be a good replacement for the whole carrier assembly and from where? limited Slip???

Sounds like the rear differential was low on fluid and trying to do burnouts, common for destruction of a limited slip differential is a donut smoke show.
The clutches in the limited slip will burn up and then seize causing it to explode.
Your can get another rear differential at the Salvage Yard, just look in your glove box and look for your PRO codes. Your PRO codes will have the information you'll need to what gear ratio you have in your Sierra and the code for the limited differential.Other places would be a drive-train shop in your area that does transmissions, rear ends and transfer case will be able to rebuild the one oyu have or replace it.
