My 2001 Gmc Sonoma runs bad in and after the rain, seems to cut out, but after I drive it for about an hour at highway speed its ok. Its been raining like crazy here, on and off for a week and now it wont start. I checked the cap and rotor, the caps points had some build up of stuff but not terrible, what do you think it is, thanks!

Tune Up?

This could be a number of things. How many miles do you have and when was it tuned up last?

Any arcing on the coil?

When was the last time you tuned it up? Cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. The Cap could have a hair line crack and you may not have noticed it. The wires could be bad (including the coil wire) and losing resistence in the rain. You drive it for a while and dry out the short and hence it runs better.

You can always start it up at night, turn off the hood light, if you have one, and look for arcing. You can grab each plug wire, one at a time too, and see if you get a little jolt too.

You can closely examine the coil for any white looking stains which may suggest a bad coil or coil wire.

I would replace the above tune-up parts as a first step, especially if it has been some time since you have done this.

When was the last time you tuned it up? Replacing the plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor? Sounds like maybe you have a bad ignition wire somewhere. Now's a good time for a tune-up. You can buy all of those parts for under $100. If that doesn't work then you have to take a good look at the coil.
