my 2001 gmc 4.3 will not crank. its gets fire and plenty of gas. when i pore gas n the top it fires up but then cuts off. what do i look for

Frist of all if it did not crank then it would not turn over or start even will fuel add. I think you mean it cranks but will not fire unless i add fuel.

Now with that out of the way check fuel pump op. two people you lay down near gas tank and have someone turn key on and see if you hear the fuel pump. If you don't hear anything then get a rubber malet or hammer and hit the tank while crankin g it over and see if it starts.
If it does the fuel pump is bad if not check fuses and relay (fuel pump).
If all thats ok check power to pump.

If you hear pump run check fuel filter.

Start with the simple and replace your fuel filter and check the ground wire to the fuel sending unit. A bad ground will cause your fuel pump to be weak, you need 62-65 PSI of fuel pressure to be able to start the engine, anything different will give you the issues you have described.

You can check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve located on the fuel line going into your injection system by the distributor, driver side.

If you don't have 62-65 PSI when starting the engine and you have checked for a bad ground and replaced the fuel filter, replace the fuel pump. The fuel pump has a life expectancy of 150,000 miles and anything longer then that is on borrowed time.

Good luck and be safe and to gain access to the fuel sending unit, you may find it easier to removed the bed rather then to drop the gas tank.
