2002 1500HD 4x4 6.0 Gas Mileage!!

I just bought this truck and it seems that I am getting 8.5 miles to the gallon around town towing nothing. Can this be right? Is this what I should expect? I got about 7 mpg pulling my 5000# boat. I need to know if this is normal.

Any 2500 truck is going to be hard on fuel, its the nature of the beast especially driving around town. 12 mpg will likely be the best you ever see. My nephew just bought a 2012 Chevy HD CC Z71 4x4. I asked him about mpg to compare it to my Denali. I mentioned 10 mpg and all he said was, I wish. I wondered why he did not buy a diesel to tow his travel trailer? $$$ he got the 6.0L engine for a good deal, a similar diesel was $9,000 more and that put the truck out of his reach.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to make sure everything is functioning and serviced properly and hope to get as close to that 12mph as I can. It is what it is, huh? Thanks again
