2002 Sierra a/c went out today

I had a problem with my a/c that started last year. My parents helped me out by paying a friend of theirs to fix it. He never could identify nor fix the problem. Now, today, it started making the noise it always does and went out.

The noise was like a loud knocking of a fan blade hitting something (not the fan blade, though), the faster the acceleration, the louder the noise and the greater the drain on the engine's power. The guy who looked at it and charged my parents eventually said "if it blowing cold just ignore the noise"...what?! It has been blowing cold, just not very hard. Now it blows great, but hot. When it went out, I was going about 50 mph, I turned on the ac, then the noise, then the noise just stopped and my truck accelerated...no more power drain...I knew of course the air would not get cold immediately. It didn't....just hot air.

Is there anyone on here who knows what this is and how much I am looking at? I am in AZ and cannot go without ac!

Sorry for the bad news, but it sounds like the person who worked on your A/C had over charged the system and now the compressor has failed and will need to be replaced. When replacing the compressor, you need to also replace the A/C accumulator.

The internal parts in the compressor will most likely have gone through the system and is in the accumulator (Filter). Good luck and keep me posted, feel free to ask me more question on the A/C to your Sierra if you have any.

open your bonnet and check if your a/c compressor is spinning and if it is not spinning with the engine then check your wiring properly.
