2002 Sierra tranny growl

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra and the transmission made a growling noise for the
first time. I backed up and same noise. I went forward again and when it
shifted to the next gear it was quiet. When it down shifted to low at a stop light
same noise again. Does this sound like a fix it problem as in a repair or the tranny needs to be rebuilt problem?
