2003 Sonoma Clutch replacement

Hello, has anyone changed a clutch out of a Sonoma? I am confused on wether or not I need to remove the shifter out of the transmission before I drop it. Does anyone know the significance of putting the shifter in third before removing it?

Haynes manual -
Step 2 - Borg Warner T5 , put in neautral New Venture gear NV1500 or NV3500 shift into 3rd or 4th ,. Remove the shift lever.

step 3 -models N.V.G. NV 1500 , NV3500 , remove the shift lever housing.

I have no idea why

And - did some more reading , it ( haynes ) says CAUTION ! DO NOT PUT THE
TRANSMISSION IN ANY OTHER GEAR WHILE THE SHIFT HOUSING IS REMOVED !

Must be a syncro / lineup thing .
Also - I added the exclamation points and made the letters capitals : )

Also also - what size motor ? I'm kind of bored so i can read and see what
other surprises lie ahead if you want.
