Here is a tricky one for you mechanics out there. I have an 03 with the three button transfer case selector switch. The problem is when I go to shift into 4wd, be it either low range or high, the transfer case shifts but the front driveshaft will not spin at all. I put it up on jacks the other day and the axle actuator is working and will lock in the axle shafts on the front axle. The transfercase shifts quickly with a slight clunk but nothing out of the ordinary. You can spin the front driveshaft by hand and there is no binding or grinding both when in 2wd and in 4wd. The selector lights on the dash switches never blink or hesitate when shifting and after you hear the case switch then the light will stay on telling you that you are in 4wd when really nothing is comming our of the foward output shaft on the t case. What could be going on inside the case? Would this be a broken shaft or could it be the encoder motor not shifting far enough?

i have the same problem

I have been having the same exact problem. I know the people who owned the truck before me and they said 4x4 worked great until they had the transmission professionally rebuilt. Every thing seems to work fine but as soon as i get into the mud there is nothing coming from the front wheels. My friend thinks that the very last component that actually locks the front wheels in is not connected. It makes me so mad because I have a lift, i have the big mud tires, but my truck gets stuck every time! Thank God i have a winch. Someone please help!!!!!!!

to check where your problem is lift the entire vehicle so no tires are touching the ground. Put the vehicle in 4wd and crawl under and spin the front driveshaft with your hand. If the tires spin then your axle is locked and the problem is in the transfercase. If your tires dont spin then your axle is still unlocked and that could either be a cable/diaphram problem or the valve in transfercase to send vacum to the actuator under the battery box
