I have a 2004 GMC Envoy that has just had the oil changed, the cam sensor and cam-shaft actuator replaced 3000 miles ago. Just recently when the engine is cold and I try to start it, it makes a scraping sound while the engine is trying to turn over. It only does it while the engine is cold, but once it warms up, and every re-start throughout the day is perfectly fine. I am however replacing the drive belt and checking all of the pullys tomorrow. If thats not it, what else could be the problem?

Could be the starter starting to go bad. I had same type of issue with my wife's Montana, the starter would only grind on the first start of the day in the winter. In the summer it wold be fine or the rest of the day also would be fine.

If it's not the starter, check the alternator. The bearing could be going bad also and your going to have to replace the alternator, to check. Your going to ahve to remove the serpentine belt and spin the alternator pulley by hand and see if you feel and hear any signs of bearing play which indicate that it's time for a new alternator soon. ;)

keep us posted on what the issue may be.
