I recently lost 3rd gear in my 06 Envoy XL Denali. All other gears hold very strong, including 4th, but 3rd started slipping under load and now doesn't hold at all. I was under the assumption that the 4L60E uses the same clutch pack for third and fourth with fourth using the 3-4 clutch and the 2-4 band so any ideas on why I only lost 3rd would be appreciated.
I'm planning on pulling the trans and doing a full rebuild in the next week or two and would like confirmation that the parts and kits I plan to purchase would work well together before purchasing them.

I know it's a little overkill but we do occasional medium towing and long-haul trips and I'm perfectly fine with spending a little extra for better components since I'm saving money by doing the rebuild myself. I also feel that the factory 4L60E is a little weak for being paired with a 300+hp motor on a 5,500 lb truck especially when towing is taken into consideration. I was actually planning on swapping in a 4L80E but the decrease in mpg was a deal breaker.
Should I also replace the shift solenoids during the rebuild and are there any other components that you would recommend replacing/upgrading? I could also use some help choosing a torque converter, preferably rated for 500hp or at least 350hp.
This is our daily driver for around town but does see some spirited driving and towing and we are perfectly fine with a quicker/harsher shift. Any advice or opinions are welcome and greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
