2008 SLT Sierra 2500 HD Z71 diesel crew cab
76000 miles 95% highway
I love this truck but, it was puchased 8/2008 and I replaced the fith low beam head light today. Left, right, left, right, left in that order. WTF? My dealer says " They're on all the time pulling double duty as the DRLs." Still seems a bit excessive to me. They also tell me they can't disable this function saying " Just turn them off when you start it. " I should not have to do that in a truck of this caliber and quality. Besides everything is controlled by a PLC, shurley it's as simple as changing a few 1s to 0s. Apparently this is Top Secret info.
I don't know what stock bulb was, I have only used Sylvania Silverstar H11.
Anybody else having this issue?
Any sugestions other than " Just turn them off when you start it. "

OK, after further research my choice of replacement bulbs doesn't have the best lifespan record.
The stock bulbs went out within 10 months as well.

Never knew anything about them, till now.
"Under normal conditions, HID Kit bulbs will endure the life of the vehicle."
I got this quote from the Plasma Garage home page. I wonder if "normal" includes the pulling double duty as DRLs as well as low beams? Does the auto on feature on my truck affect life? Also how will they affect or cause any damage to my electrical system? Do they make a replacement for highbeam? The lowbeams are H11, which color will look best or at least not look bad with the stock highbeams on.
You seem to know alot about GMC trucks. Do you have these on your own vehicle, maybe know someone who likes or hates them.

I find it interesting that you had problems with the silverstars. I had a similar issue with them when I installed them in a 2002 Jaguar I had. It seems when I started the car the voltage output was at the max end of the silverstar and would blow them. I contacted sylvania and they said that this is a problem with some cars and especially ones with DRL. I went back to a OEM bulb. I was wondering if you can turn off these DRL's so if someone knows please speak up.

I had have a new style GM truck since July of 07 and I never had a lamp burn out. Something is causing it....

I was looking one day at the lamps in my last truck and I seem to recall they were Sylvania as oem.

Btw - The HID's on my CTS cannot be serviced by the owner. They have constructed the front end so that you have to disassemble the front end to get at them. Very dangerous if not handled properly, high voltage. They can retain the high voltage long after turned off.
