2008 sierra 4wd light intermittent

4wd light some time lights up when in 2wd/4wd drive sometimes it doesn't/ Drive down road turn knob on dash from 2wd to 4 high light with come on and then when you look down again it's not lit none of them are. no flashing. turn knob back to 2wd still no indicator. driving down road with it set on 4wd drive will stay steady for quite awhile, look again and it's black. turning knob does nothing. Tried shifting from standstill doesn't matter.
