Hi all, my parents are having problems with their truck and I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice.
They have a 2008 GMC Sierra Z71 that they purchased new. For the last few years it has burned oil, which from what I've read is pretty common on those first years of that model. They had some engine work performed by the dealer under warranty, but I am not sure what that was.
In July it started blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust. They took it to their mechanic (not the dealer) that has been reliable. They decided it had something to do with the active fuel management system letting oil build up in/around the unused cylinders. My parents are retired and do not travel, so what little driving they do is almost all city driving. So the shop disabled the fuel management system.
About two weeks ago my dad started hearing a ticking sound on cranking, which he thought sounded like a cracked manifold. But within a day or two it had gotten very loud so he stopped driving it and took it to the shop. The shop didn't open the engine up but they said they think the lifters are bad and probably damaged the cam. My dad asked them if disabling the fuel mgmt system could do that and the guy yes.
My parents went and met with the manager and he said that the first guy was wrong, that disabling the fuel mgmt system wouldn't cause the problem. Does anyone know if it would cause the problem or not? If it's the shops fault they need to pay for the repair.
Thanks in advance!
