The eigth digit in the vin is an J in my 1500 with a 5.3 V8. All fuel in my area is E85. Is there any harm in running this fuel, or do I need to travel to find unleaded gasoline?

If your vehicle is not E85 capable then you cannot run E85 at all. Look inside your gas flap and see if there is a sticker indicating that your vehicle is E85 capable.

Alcohol is extremely corrosive and unless you have the necessary upgrades on your engine and fuel delivery system, then you will damage your engine and fuel delivery system.

Upgrades to run E85 are usually not recommended unless done at the time the vehicle is manufactured. 10% ethanol in your gasoline is about all your engine can handle and most gas in the U.S. is already mixed with 10% ethanol.

Bottom line, if your vehicle was not manufactured to run on E85 then don't put it in your tank. Hope this helps. ;)

I believe I see my error in stating "all in my area have E85".
E85 would stand for 15%? Where as most gasoline in my area has 10% ethanol? Thank you,

franco, could you direct message me your whole VIN so I can look up your vehicle and check to see which engine it has? There were 4 different 5.3L V8 engine options for the 2008 model year. Two of them are E85 compatible. As to whether or not you can use gasoline that has 10% ethanol in it in a non E85 engine I would not have that information. I hope to hear back from you soon.

E10 is 10% ethanol / 90% gas
E15 is 15% ethanol / 85% gas
E85 is 85% ethanol / 15% gas

The 2008 can use E10, all modern vehicles can use E10. E15 is not widely available and may not be suitable for all engines.

If your vehicle can use E85 it will have a yellow gas cap and a name plate on the tailgate that says FLEXFUEL, all others have a black gas cap.

Lots of stations will have E10 but it might not even say so on the pump since all engines can tolerate it.

Z15 thank you,

The fuel blend at service stations is not widely posted, and when you do ask the reply is " uh 10% I think". Thinking E85 was the standard for blending I was lost on finding real answers. The fears of alcohol damage spread like dirty rumors.

I misunderstood the blending ratio and now feel better buying local fuel.
I enjoy my truck and only want to protect my investment.
