So I have a 2008 gmc Sierra z71 and today after hunting I was driving home with my trailer hooked up and a fourwheeler on it. I stopped at a convince store. I got back in and put my truck in reverse it clearly didn't want to turn and was stuck in 4wd I noticed there was a message saying service four wheel drive on the dash. I drove home and tried to play with it to get it to work. It wouldn't engage any different setting then auto. And like I said the auto happened to be stuck in 4 high. Please help i need to use this vehicle for work! Thanks!!

Sorry to hear about your vehicle. After analyzing the manual, the only relevant information it contains is how to properly shift out of four-wheel drive. I'm not sure if you knew this, but it is recommended that you shift with the vehicle going 1 to 2 mph with the transmission in neutral and the ignition in "Run." If you're still having an issue with this, please let me know and we can look further into the situation. Thanks and good luck!

same thing happened to me

I turned the knob all the way clockwise (past the 4W-lo) and that fixed the issue for me. I also sent it into the dealer and they didnt do a darn thing and just said "thats weird".

All this electronic crap is far from fool-proof. I just had to have them re-calibrate my TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) as it was always saying "service TPMS". Talking with the service advisor (whom I know) he said they waste a lot of time chasing these electronic gremlins and they cannot replace anything that works for them. Too much poor quality components, although they are priced very high as replacement parts.

Sounds like a bad switch or some other electronic gremlin.

sounds like you might have been binding to me!

needed to hit a little gravel and/or shift back to 2wd before hitting the pavment!

next time try unbinding the load... goose it in loose gravel or mud.. then shift back to two wheel drive according to the instructions... see if that helps

cheers

Had a similar problem this evening. Turning the knob beyond the 4L and back to 2wd also allowed me to disengage the 4wd.
