2011 GMC Sierra x-cab SLT Z71 4x4 5.3L
25,500 miles

I've had a few problems over the past month, but today my truck would just keep turning over (like a car without gas). Not a battery issue and I'm pretty sure it's not bad gas. When I finally did get it started a puff of black then white smoke came out for a short period. It seemed to drive ok (no problems idling), gas mileage seemed normal and the truck started right up after driving for 1/2 hour or so.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm sure it would be covered under warranty but I'm curious. Sensor issues maybe?

cruise123,
I would like to apologize for the experience that you had with your Sierra. I do understand your concerns with this. Have you had a chance to have your dealer look into this? I would like you to keep me posted and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.
Thank you,

this sounds like a camshaft positioning sensor,

Symptoms of a bad CMP (Camshaft Positioning Sensor)
1. Long start, hard start- this is your issue im assuming,
2. Fuel economy
3. Lack of power.
4. Check engine light.

A trailing edge of the cam signal is received to indicate cylinder 1 on compression stroke by ICM
The next leading edge of the CKP informs ICM to open primary windings and fire coil.

i lead to this cause it turns over, but i would check fuel pressure also cause your fuel pump might be failing causing a long crank, depending on your skillz it can be tested by you or if you feel uncomf you should bring to dealer
