i have a 2011 gmc sierra 1500 z71 4 door gas...i tow a boat and trailer that weighs roughly 4000 lbs. up certain hills it struggles. would a super chip, exhaust, and an air intake make a difference in the performance? anyone have any other suggestions?

Do you have the "tow" button on shift level pushed in? Sounds like truck is trying to stay in 6th gear with convertor locked up. Can't do that going up hill...

Do you know your rear gear ratio? If you have the 3.08:1, it will object a bit to steep grades. If you have the more standard 3.42:1 (I think?), as suggested, hit the tow button.

I regularly towed a boat, motor, trailer that weighed in around 2500 lbs with gear and gas in it, and my 2012 barely even knew it was there or saw any appreciable decline in gas mileage. I would hit hills with ease, but they are not significant grade around here.

What's the mileage on your 2011?

i live in the mountains so huge grades im going up. i will look into the gear ratio. tow button does little help with the steep grades. 32k on the mileage
