I recently bought my Savana so that I could tow a toy hauler. When I purchased the van from the dealer, I asked that they install the tow package onto the van as part of the deal, which they did. They informed me that it was a 7-pin connector and when I bought the brake controller I'd be able to just hook up the wires and go.

I have now ended up at 2 different GMC dealers and the dealership that sold me my toy hauler and they are all telling me that it is NOT POSSIBLE to wire a brake controller to my van, that unless the tow package is FACTORY installed, it isn't possible to do.

Can someone please explain to me how that can be?! I have looked through every brochure online, I researched towing capacities ad nauseum and NOWHERE does it say that this is a factory installed item only. Plus, you'd think the dealer would tell me that when I specifically asked for the towing package...

Try either a U-Haul dealer or a good RV dealer. E-Trailer sells the controllers and wiring packages, So I would expect it can be done without the factory wiring, just more hassle. And go back to the dealer that told you they set up the wiring for the brake controller, and tell them what's going on. Good Luck.
