I have a 1997 2500 without any door emblems. How do I know if it is a 2500 or a 2500HD? Was the HD even a designation in '97? There is also no door tag listing the GVW.

As far as I know HD was not a option in 1997, but there was a least two different GVW ratings availible, 7200lb and 8600lb. If you want to know which your truck is you can look at the truck itself to see if it has the full floating rear axles or you can use a VIN decoder on-line.

Full floating rear axles, 7.4L. long bed, extra cab. Don't know about anything else yet, I have only had it for a few days, not enough time to really start working on it yet.

Those did not come into being till the new body style 1999 models and then the continued to build the LD K2500 until the end of the 2001 model year.
