i have a 1989 gmc jimmy, 350, 700r4, 4wd. it usually wont shift into any gear. if you shut it off and turn it back on it sometimes kicks into gear for about 15 seconds, then it kicks back out of gear. i just replaced fluis and filter. any help is appreciated.

Did the Jimmy shift into gear before you changed fluid and filters? If it did you waited too long for the servicing. And now the new fluid and filter will not help you. In fact, it ruins the tranny.

No movement in any gear, pump failure or total loss of fluid. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the Transmission is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.

Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your Jimmy running 100% again soon.

Loss of all gears, and a binding drive shaft, could be a snapped output shaft. Try to wiggle driveshaft - if more than 0.020" play, that's the sign.
