ok when i start the truck the rpm's will jump around from 700-1000. the truck shakes and i know it aint supposed to run as rough as it is. could it be bad gas? what can i do to get it running like new again?

Do you have the TBI or CPI ("W") engine? Mileage on the engine? We'll assume you have the CPI engine.

It could be bad gas but that would correct itself over a short period of time.

So you would first change the fuel filter, if it is approaching 15,000 miles.

Then if the condition persists you would think fuel pump or injectors/FPR. If you don't have longer cranking times and the fuel pump makes the same sound as always and when you test it at the fuel rail, it is producing enough PSI, we would now move on to the injectors (if you have the CPI engine).

Injectors get clogged over time and the fuel pressure regulator can and does fail too. If you have the CPI you would pull off the intake plenum and look for any washing in the intake, where gas is leaking from an injector or the FPR. Do you have washing - typically on one side only? If you have washing, you would initially replace the FPR (about $45) and the intake gasket (about $15.00) and you would clean the plenum area with carb cleaner really well before installation. The intake plenum bolts must be torqued to spec and tightened in sequence.

Now does it idle better? More power? Better mileage?
