94 Suburban k1500

Arrrg! Last night my belt broke, well it was wrapped around the alt. and pulley. It was shredded but still in one piece. I replaced the a/c compressor with a pulley and new belt 2 weeks ago and until last night all was well
Any advise, could I have messed something up when doing the above mentioned to cause this?
