Hello,
My son has a '96 GMC Jimmy and the fuel pump went out. Is it possible to bypass the tank mounted fuel pump with a less expensive inline electric fuel pump and get back to running again?

Sorry, there is no such thing. Your going to have to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump. A external pump will loose it's prim over night and you may have a non start and if your parked on a steep grade, the fuel may feed back to the gas tank and you'll have a no start also.

Job is not hard to do, just keep in mind that your jimmy is a 96 and the gas tank it self may need to be replaced and parts of the fuel line from corrosion.

Stay safe and keep us posted

Thank you for the reply!

I think it is time to sell the Jimmy. They get $200 plus for a fuel pump and it doesn't look like much fun to take the tank out. I had a drag boat with a 455 Olds engine and used an electric fuel pump on that. Never had a single problem ever. This whole idea of remote fuel pumps that are a combination of everything with no easy access is the reason I am a Ford man. Thank you again!
