4wd not working, replaced dash buttons, checked the vacuum actuator under the battery this seems to be working-still 4wd not working. A mechanic told me to replace the actuator that is on the axle-which I think is called a vacuum switch, locates on the transfer case? Haven't gotten to getting under the truck yet. Do you need special stuff for the threads when replacing this part? If this doesn't work whats next!

There is a switch on the front dif which is very easy to change.....screw out old one screw in new one. The vacuum switch on the transfer case is in a tough spot....top front drivers side of t-case. The linkage is in the way but I know it is doable because I have done much research on this. I am replacing mine as soon as weather permits. Make sure you check the vacuum lines and replace them if they are dried and cracked. Can get the line at any auto parts store. As for the threads I don't know.....maybe someone can help out with that.

Nope, all you need is a open end wrench and a back message after of 15 min of cursing under the Sonoma.

I have a spare vacuum switch in my glove box cause there common to go bad, but most of the time when they go bad. The front axle is locked, You can remove the right headlight and look through to check to see if the front actuator is engaged when your Sonoma is running and 4wd turned on.

Keep us posted and keep warm.

Thanks Molson. Most work I do on my Sonoma has some cursing involved....this will be no different. Good tip about the headlight. Should the accuator be compressed when in 4WD or open?

The actuator should be compressed when the 4wd is active. You can also check the vacuum line at the actuator to see if there is vacuum to the actuator.

The other common issues to the system is that the cable it self will corrode and will get stuck and will not engage the fork to lock the front differential.

Good to check the cable it self if there is vacuum in the line and the cable is not moving to lock the axle with a good actuator.

Keep us posted.
