Hello all,
Just checking in.. had some major work done to my old 97 jimmy over the past month.. new upper and lower ball joints and a new fuel pump.. I've done a bunch of work on it over the years and was thinking of getting rid of it but just can't seem to find anything out there that compares to it as far as power and usablility.. although I've maybe put a few bucks in it that I maybe shouldn't it still feels cheaper than buying something you don't know anything about.. Anyway to get on with it.. after a couple weeks of enjoying my new parts now it seems I am in the world of transmissions which I know next to nothing about. vehicle has 175,000 on it.. and 140,000 of that is all mine!
When I get into the car to start it up.. and when I put it into drive it takes a couple seconds for it actually start moving.. once moving or just driving normal, stop and go traffic ect.. it is fine.. again, only on initial start up after car has been turned off or sitting.. one of the garages I took it to said to not worry about it right now.. some sort of pump is getting weak but it isn't a big deal at the moment. that kind of makes me nervous so just want to hear what anyone else may think it is and if it is going to leave me stranded sooner or later.
thanks!
Rob

Not saying it is , not saying it isn't -

Have you changed the fluid and filter ?

I had the transmission and fluids flushed and redone 1 year and half ago.. I think its called a back flush or something.. so yes in recent years that service has been done.

Did some reading , ( want to know what I have to look forward to lol ) most
( but not all ) Jimmy tranny shifting problems were / are caused by a bad solenoid in the transmission itself .
The rest were - an electrical issue , a bad modulator valve ( if it has one ) , or the tranny was in need of a rebuild .
Note - only saw 1 reference to any type of pump .

A scan might help narrow it down .

Back flush usually causes transmission failure, visit a local trans shop. Have them go for a drive to verify proper line pressure with a gauge. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.490" boost valve (easy fix in pan).

Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation is caused by Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, or failing EPC solenoid, and worst case a leaky seals throughout the transmission.

Start with these few things before you spend $1,800 on a rebuilt transmission.

thanks,
I'll start with your suggestions on this and see where it leads. Just a note though for what its worth.. I havn't noticed any hesitation or degrade in any of the other gears, again its just when you first start the vehicle up and put it into drive. It'll just kind of sit there for about 5 seconds and then it seems fine.. I tow a boat a few times through the summer and a small utility trailer from time to time so I don't think I'm too hard on it. but again it is starting to get up there in miles so I guess anything is possible at this point.

Well here we are exactley a month late and today I lost OD and third gear at the same time.. Vehicle can't get over 30 mph without reving to 4g in those two gears.. I limped home in 2nd. So, I've been reading that there are solinoid and fuse issues with these transmissions or is the tranny just toast.. Also the service engine light came on a couple days ago but not sure yet if that has any corolation to whats going on.. at thanks giving I drained out a some tranny fluid and put some Lucas trans fluid in and it really didn't help much on the slippage but did help it go into gear sooner.

A transmission issue will cause the service engine light to come on.

( I would ) - check fuse 24 TRANS , double check fluid level
then get a scan done , some parts store will let you do it in their parking lot.

No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.

Sorry for the bad news from what you have been describing to us. :(
