Hello everyone,
I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy that has been having massive problems starting. It turns over but just doesn't fire up. I haven't been able to start it for a couple months now and finally got enough money to try to troubleshoot it myself. It has stalled out only a very few times and I had to turn it back on. It idled what I thought was kind of low for the time I did drive it, also there was small hesitation when I would give it a little gas. other than that it ran beautifully. I'm at a loss on what I can do now taking it to a shop is almost out of the option simply because of funds.

Ive tried starting fluid in the carb but still no go. I bought a computer scanner and it won't pick up any codes at all. Service Engine Soon, ABS, and Battery lights are the ones that stay on after turning on. When I go to crank it I noticed my dash lights dim a bit and Ive charged the battery up a couple times to make sure it was juiced. I've had problems with it starting before and I could get cables and jumping it would get me out of the bind... Possibly a bad battery? Last 2 times I've tried jumping it with a 2004 chevy express and they have pretty beastly alternators from what Ive heard but still no dice. I've recently replaced the fuel filter but the old one seemed fine. Also I've replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor because I've read they can cause the engine not to fire, also tend to go south pretty often. I want to rule out it being a fuel problem because of the no go with starting fluid. starter turns over so I dont think its that either. I've read possibly the BCM could be the culprit too... Help would be muuuuch appreciated and thanks for taking your time to read this!

Remove your ICM (Ignition Control Module) and have it tested at NAPA or Auto Zone. Most places like that will test the ICM first before you by the replacement ICM.

Check the wire harness and leads also t your ICM and the fuses to your ECM 1 and ECM 2 in the fuse panel.

Good luck and keep us posted, then we can go from there.

i am having the exact same issue, did you figure out what it was? im at a loss on what to do next as funds are limited :S

if u have those three lights on after starting the engine you have codes. more than likely the reason you aren't able to get them is the data link connector fuse is blow its the same # as the cig. lighter you can find it in the fuse panel located on the driver side of dash when door is open. this was what held me up for a week or 2. try it good luck
