My dad has a 99 GMC Jimmy 4wd. The other day when he put it in drive and started moving, it immediately started making a grinding noise from the front of the car. Then I told him to slow down and when he neared a stop we felt and heard a clunk. For the rest of the ride, the vehicle is fine. It only seems to do it first thing in the morning. What could it be

Hi,
He probably has a brake pad that is hanging, it is most likely the inner one that the piston pushes on, the pad is probably worn down to where the metal part of the pad is getting caught on a slider or in the slider area.

Changing the front pads will stop it, also when changing the pads he should custom fit the pads to the sliders, the backing plate for the brake material is stamped out on a press and the edges need to be filed or ground with a grinder for a custom fit so they will slide and not jam up over time.

Brake shops and dealers won't take the time to do that but if he does his own brake job it is well worth the time.

Could be the 4WD is trying to engage and dragging along, I would have
it checked at a front end shop.
