I just bought a new (well, new to me) Jimmy. It's a 1999 sle 4.3 L V6 with 209k mi ... I'm just wondering the best motor oil I should purchase for optimal performance. I drive about 10-20 mi a day in Ohio weather. I'm going to give him an oil change here soon and just wanted to ask ya'll on here first.

Just a little side note, I purchased a 2001 Jimmy back in 2010 and fell in love with the Jimmy's. I've done a lot of work on my 01 and it's still a great vehicle EXCEPT for the rust ...LOTS OF RUST... rust stop, oil sprays and frequent washes didn't make any difference lol. So I decided to purchase another and just happened across a 99 in excellent body condition and well maintained mechanically. Just gave him a tune up and replaced the o2 sensors and he's a happy truck! :) I'll be parting my 2001 as needed for my 1999 :)

I've always been using http://www.chevronlubricants.com/co...lo-400-xle-10w-30-synblend-sp-flat-b1637a.jpg in all my vehicles...

Yes i know it says Diesel engine , but its less expensive then http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71bYxJrwF5L._SL1500_.jpg and has the same additives...

Glad your still running a Jimmy and keep posting...

Hello

Sometimes these threads can spark and interesting debate, but since you asked for suggestions, Ill throw my hat in the ring.

I have always used Rotella 15W-40 in my higher mileage vehicles. Usually this oil is used in Diesel engines, but we used it everything.

Growing up, my dad worked in citrus management down here in Florida, so we always had good ole Rotella within arms reach. Thinking of all the abuse John Deere tractors go through, big Detroit Diesel throw out pumps and other equipment we used regularly, Rotella always did us well.

Never had a failure due to oil breakdown etc.

Good luck with your search and decision.

Should stick to whats been used in the engine for the whole life. i always reccomend high milage motor oil, its a synthetic convential blend. makes the oil get up faster to the top of motor and still good for a thick coating

Just use synthetic and follow the recommended oil change interval.

I've learned that regular oil between two metal surfaces is like (friendly) gravel. Full synthetic oil is like smoooooth ball bearings.

I'm digging on the smooth, however. I might try some synthetic on my own 01 jimmy 4wd as we don't use it too often. It is running 5w-30 pennzoil dinosaur vomit currently.
