I have a 1999 5.7L GMC suburban.
Any suggestions for getting better gas mileage.
Mine is horrible, even with the smaller engine.

I'd say start with the basics such as oil change, new air filter, spark plugs, plug wires etc. Check also for exhaust leaks, exhaust back pressure, vacuum leaks, proper tire inflation and being that it's a 99' you might want to try and get a scan tool hooked up just to see how your overall engine is performing. I've got a 99' K1500 and I believe they were only rated at 11/15 city/hwy so anything above that is great. You may even want to change all your fluids to synthetics. Just my 2 cents.

Driving habits can make a big difference. The saying drive like you have a raw egg between your foot and the gas pedal does helps a lot. Do what you can to anticipate light changes changes in traffic flow etc and ease off the gas. Its a big heavy vehicle it'll coast for a long time. I just picked up a 98 Jimmy and the trip computer says the previous owner was averaging 17 mpg. I'm averaging 20.5 without any mechanical changes.
