Would I be able to take a computer out of a used car, same make model and year and put it in the van I have? Would it work or am I going to have to buy a new computer for the van? 01 4.3 Safari van.

It should work, however keep two things in mind- computers in cars are like those at home, beyond a certain age they become less reliable(in other words don't invest a lot in a used one) and 2- This is the "brain" for your car, and it may need some program updates....or it may fire up without a hitch!
best of luck!

The answer is no it won't work. I would go for a remanufactured one. There are plenty of places on the internet that can send you one programed and ready to plug in. You can try here http://www.autoecu.com/

well it can work but you will need to relearn the theif system. Heres how.
Install computer then try to start(it won't) leave the key on and the theif light should be flashing. Wait about 10 mins and the theif light will go out. With out shuttimng the key off try to start again (it won't). again leave the key on and wait for the theif light to go out. repeat 1 more time till the theif light goes out. shut off key for 10 sec and then start the tk it will run this time. Now only problem is your vin in the computer and the bcm will not match the vin of your tk. T5his will put the air bag light on with a vin miss match code.

Also what you can do is buy the used pcm take it to the dealer and they will install it and program it for you with your vin. Ruffly a hours labor to do so.

You can buy a re-manufacture PCM for your Safari at Auto Zone and there price is not that bad.

Good luck and keep us posted and they will have all the instructions your going to need to swap out your old PCM.

2001 GMC Safari 4.3

Update: I have yet to do anything to the van.......simply because I've been layed off and Im scared to spend money but.....I went out to the van today and just for the heck of it I tryed to start it and sure enough it fired right up, took it around the block and it did fine, pulled it into the drive way and it acted as if it was getting no gas??? sputtering and such, also I noticed a real strong order....like rotten egg's....like a bad battery but it was coming from the tail pipe. I am thinking if the computer is bad, it could of just been a fluke and started and the computer no doing it's job with emmision's is the cause of the smell? Now it act's like it want's to start but wont......fuel filter? I had the codes cleared and no codes are showing right now? Any thought's?...Will

p.s. I did replace the crank sensor (because that was the code I got ) then the P1683 code showed up after I changed it??
