I have a 2002 GMC 1500 with the 5.3L which I have used for the last 7 years to pull a 16' enclosed racing trailer. One track I go to is 177 miles away, and I have no problem making the trip one way on a tank of fuel, with a bit less than a quarter tank to spare. I just purchased a 2012 GMC 1500 with the 5.3L, the only difference being it's a crew cab instead of a standard cab. I have a camper top on this truck, and tonneau cover on the 2002. I'm pulling the same trailer, with the exact same load in it. I had a half tank of ethanol when I filled the tank with gasoline before heading down, and I was on the empty peg when I arrived. On the way home I had straight gasoline in the tank and I ran out of fuel on the exit ramp. It looks like I averaged less than 7 MPG. One would expect that a vehicle 10 years newer would get better fuel mileage.
I'm now considering computer programmers, hoping to improve my fuel mileage while towing. Any suggestions which one is the best for my purpose, and why?
Thanks!
Bill
