Could it be something other than the obvious?

Can't keep power steering fluid in the resevoir. It would appear to be a bad power steering pump. But, as I have been wrong before should I be looking at something else as well or first?

Didn't see any fluids on the hoses so I don't think it's the return or hi pressure hoses...

Anything else?

Anyone done this job? Any tips? I guess I need to go buy a puller...

So no leaking from the hoses, what about the pump case or the steering gear? Those are the 2 points that the hoses connect to so check the housing.

Ah.... the steering gear. Didn't check that. As for the pump case, didn't think to check that either. Thanks ! Will go see.

Well, I'll be. It WAS the gear box....

Traced it back to a hairline crack.

No problem. I was in the same boat with my '83 Sierra. I even looked at it a million times but never thought to feel around and see if there was any fluid on it haha.
