Driving in 4hi

I drove my 02 envoy home from ohio about 500 miles in 4hi. Forgot that it was on. Speeds up to 70mph. Would that normally cause problems? Its making a noise now. Mech says he believes it's a wheel bearing but it sounds more like a gear problem to me. Most people say its tire whine but I know that isn't it. I was a maintenance mech and heard a lot of bad drive gear boxes and thats what it sounds like to me. It will go into 4wd.

How is it in the 2wd mode?? any noise??? keep us posted and we can go from there. I converted my jimmy to awd and I'm on the hyway for most of its time without any issues.

Im coming back after trying to find out what the noise is. BTW my user is changed. I'm driving in 2wd but it will work in 4wd, all 3 I believe. I took the Envoy to a friends and we put it on stands and ran it in gear up to 60mph. There was lots of noise under the car. Most seemed to come from the rear diff traveling forward on the drive shaft. We took it to a mech at the local Chevy dealer and we road tested it. First thing he said was you can't tell much doing what we did, you'll hear all kinds of noises when there isn't a load on the running gear. He also felt, as have I, a high freq vibration in the steering wheel. He said its a wheel bearing, left front. He said if the noise was coming from the rear you wouldn't feel it in the steering. I guess I'll have to get a new assem to find out who's right.

Start with the simple and make sure the tire pressure is correct and then rotate the tires to eliminate that the vibration and noise is not from a tire going bad. If it is time service the transmission fluid and drive train, have the transmission fluid and filter, transfer case, axle fluid changed and inspect the U-joints.
