Hello all. I'm doing an upgrade to an electric cooling fan. HOw do you get the fan clutch off the water pump? And has anyone ever done this? I have a 2000 sonoma 4x4, and would like to help with fuel mileage. Any tips or tricks is appreciated!

you need a special tool to remove it it most likly will have an oppisite thread so it will be right to loosen it. the tool you can get from any auto store and its easy to use. Just make sure you electric fan works before installing it. ON my sonoma the guy who owned it before me did it and the fan didnt even work...lol. Also make sure you have a control for it either temp or just a basic on off switch to turn it on and off.

thanks bigmac. I saw that tool, maybe an auto place can loan it. Anyways yes i have the temp sensor and all wiring and circuit breakers. Hope it helps a little with mpg's...

well the fan works now at added 1 1/2 mpg....that'll add up to savings. Just ordered a 180 thermostat for the engine, so the fan will shut off at 195

its definatly quieter for sure. as for performance, not sure I dont do a lot of heavy pulling or hauling, so i cant tell really....glad i did it though.

Electric fan

Did you buy a 'kit' or install separate components that were modified to work with your Sonoma?

Fishin_wi, I did this conversion back in Feb last year as well. Ran it through a Phoenix, AZ summer with no issues either. I found a late 90's ford taurus 2 speed fan and a control unit from AutoZone that works great. I love the quiet and the fuel economy it has gained. As you stated, 1.5MPG increase is about what I got as well. Definitely recommend this conversion to any 4.3L owner.

Cool! Glad it worked out for you, especially in AZ. I live in WI so half the year my fan never comes on anyway haha.
