Faulty Service Engine Light??

My '98 2.2 had a SERVICE ENGINE SOON light come on yesterday, but she's running perfectly fine (minus the sudden extreme suckage of fuel mileage), and I ran a scan on her today with no codes.. Any ideas? She idles fine, shifts smoothly, accelerates properly, and drives perfect...

Well you and I will have a lot in common to talk about. I also have a 98 sonoma 2.2. I have 140,000 on mine and i have had a lot of things replaced on mine the last couple of years. Your problem sounds a lot like the one i was having with my check engine light. I started out the light would come on at random and stay on for different lengths of time and go out. I had it scanned but nothing. The mechanic told me that the computer was loosing its memory. I thought what the heck it is running good so i won't worry about it. Then it started going dead while iddleing at stop light, Not Good. Long story short i replaced the computer and no more problems. I tried having it flashed but it wouldn't work. Advance auto best price.

Sorry to respond so late. I had thought this forum died out because no one had responded to anything I wrote, minus one person. My service light is doing exactly what yours is starting to do.. the last length was 8 days, then went out for about going on 3 days now.. the idle is fine, but i'm noticing that the fuel mileage is getting even worse. i filled up ($43 to fill up), and reset the trip.. I am currently at just under a quarter tank, and I've only gone 208.4 miles... If the computer is going out, as you said, then it's time to visit my local advance auto..

I would say that I'm probably at the point where the idle is scheduled to start going out. My last service light episode was for 8 days, and now it's been off for 3 days... As of right now, the only thing I am noticing is that my fuel mileage is getting much worse.. I filled up Monday ($43 to fill), and reset the trip. As of today, I am just under a quarter tank, and I've only travelled 208.6 miles...
